A look back at this year’s Campus Cleanup

This year, there were interesting things to learn about biodiversity, bees and the flowering meadow, and we received active support from many dedicated members of the university community.

On the afternoon of 25 March 25, we joined the City of Mittweida’s call for a spring clean and organised a campus clean-up. This was organised by the Climate Protection Management team on behalf of the Sustainability Round Table and supported by over 20 committed students and staff from Mittweida University of Applied Sciences.

To start with, Julia Pietsch gave an insight into the wildflower meadow and its biodiversity, whilst Lisa Prudnikow spoke about her bee research, some of which she carries out on campus. Participants also learnt how long it actually takes for various materials to decompose and just how harmful small items of litter are to flora and fauna in our environment. Afterwards, everyone was all the more motivated to pick up their litter pickers and clear the campus of rubbish. In the process, they found countless cigarette ends, bottle tops, plastic waste, lighters and vapes, glass and plastic bottles, mirror tiles and other oddities.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the participants and hope to inspire many more members of the university community to take part in next year’s spring clean!
